About the Author

George Herrman is from East Peoria, Ill and was born in 1972. He graduated from East Peoria Community High School in 1991. Soon after graduation, he enlisted in the Army where he spent four years working on electronic devices and achieved a remarkable military career by attaining the rank of Sergeant before his discharge in 1995. Upon leaving the military he started his college career at a local community college, Illinois Central College (ICC) and at the same time worked for Sonitrol, an electronic security company located in Peoria, Ill. After graduating with his Associates Degree he transferred to Western Illinois University (WIU) where he received both a Bachelors and Masters of Science Degrees in I.T.T. After graduating from WIU, Herrman spent the next nine years working for the Department of Defense as a project manager at Rock Island Arsenal, Ill. Bel Marra Health Reports on a New Study Revealing a New Approach to Reverse Aging

While the hypothalamus is a very small structure in the brain, it is an important structure that is responsible for a number of vital functions in the body. It produces hormones that control the sleep-wake cycle as well as body temperature, hunger, thirst, emotional response and sex drive.

In addition to controlling these functions in the body, the hypothalamus is responsible for releasing hormones from many glands in the body, especially the pituitary gland.

As aging occurs, changes occur to the inflammation levels in various body tissues. Inflammation is also a key characteristic in many diseases associated with aging, including metabolic syndrome, heart disease, neurological disease and several forms of cancer.

Previous research conducted by Dongsheng Cai, M.D., Ph.D. and colleagues has shown that changes in the hypothalamus involving inflammation can contribute to metabolic syndrome. Due to the connection between inflammation and aging, and with inflammation and the hypothalamus, Dr. Cai and his colleagues were interested in how inflammation in the hypothalamus may be involved in the aging process.

Inflammation involves a number of different molecules and a protein complex called NF-kB (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells). This is at the center of the inflammation process. Because of the significant role that NF-kB plays in inflammation, Dr. Cai and colleagues focused on this protein complex for their current study.

The researchers found that activating the NF-kB protein complex in mice dramatically accelerated the aging process. These results were based on physiological, cognitive and behavioral test factors, where decreases in cognitive and physiological abilities are associated with aging. Results showed that the mice had decreased muscle strength and size, decreased elasticity of skin and a decreased ability to learn new tasks. On the other hand, mice that had a NF-kB pathway blocked in their hypothalamus had slower aging rate and about a 20 percent increased lifespan.

Recent research has possibly found new ways to fight against aging and the decline of brain function that often accompanies aging. Preventing the hypothalamus from creating inflammation by blocking the NF-kB pathway, and increasing neurogenesis with GnRH injections, are two possible strategies that might help people to live longer, healthier lives. This research brings hope to all of those individuals looking for timeless youth.

Sofia U Professor, Author and LGBTQ Activist Judy Grahn Wins 2013 Independent Publisher Book Award

Internationally acclaimed poet and Sofia University professor, Judy Grahn, has won a silver IPPY award on behalf of Independent Publisher, who this year celebrated their 17th Annual Independent Publisher Book Awards. Grahns memoir, A Simple Revolution The Making of an Activist Poet, was awarded a silver medal in the category of Gay/Lesbian Non-Fiction. The awards ceremony to honor the medalists will take place on May 29, 2013 in New York, on the eve of the BookExpo America convention.

Grahn has written twelve books and poetry collections, including Blood, Bread, and Roses How Menstruation Created the World, and Another Mother Tongue Gay Words, Gay Worlds.
